"Macon" our way to Robins AFB and Middle Georgia...

This is what we've learned about the area so far:

Robins Air Force Base is in the town of Warner Robins, or, maybe more correctly, the town surrounds the base. The base was there first, sort of--an Army air depot, built in 1941-1942 in rural farmland about 15 miles south of Macon, Georgia. It was named after Army Air Corps General Augustine Warner Robins, and as soon as it opened, the adjoining little town of Wellston eagerly renamed itself after the same person, and has been growing ever since.

It's a pretty impressive place. Robins AFB is Georgia's largest industrial complex, with over 19,000 workers and the largest runway in Georgia. They fly the B-1B Lancer, the KC-135 Stratotanker, and the E-8 JSTARS radar aircraft. It's the Air Force's depot for maintenance of the F-15 Eagle, C-5 Galaxy, C-141 Starlifter, C-130 Hercules, all Air Force helicopters, special operations aircraft, and variety of other systems. It has an aviation museum that's the second largest in the Air Force (after the one at Wright-Patterson AFB) and the fourth largest in the country.

Warner Robins is a town of about 50,000 (and growing), in a county of about 103,000. From what we can tell, it's hot in the summer, seldom gets down to freezing in the winter, and is humid all the time. It's 365 feet above sea level. It's 15 miles from Macon, 100 miles from Atlanta, and 165 miles from the beaches in Savannah. They are very proud of their tie to the base. They have a motto: EDIMGIAFAD, which stands for "Every Day In Middle Georgia Is Air Force Appreciation Day." Cost of living appears comparable to Dayton, maybe a little less.

We'll be about 620 miles from Dayton and about 730 miles from Washington D.C. That means Anne's and Allen's grandparents (and anyone else who wants to visit us from those places) can get there in one long day's drive. From Dayton, it's simple: go south all day on I-75, then hang a left at Warner Robins. From Washington, it's almost as simple: go south most of the day on I-95, then west for a while on I-16. Come see us! (After we buy a house, that is...)
